International Sports Club's History
Paul Fortwendel was in his third year studying Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University when he purchased his first fitness center on the Levee in West Lafayette, March of 1984. This center was the first privately owned fitness center in Mid-North Indiana, Dean’s Family Fitness Center. Paul continued as a student, but soon found the rewards of the Health & Fitness Industry to draw him into opening another facility in Indianapolis by ’86. His wife Lori joined the organization during this time.
Through the years International has grown and become a dynamic team, bringing new methods and formats to the region. Currently International Sports Clubs offers two outstanding facilities,(Lafayette & West Lafayette) complete with the largest workout floors, family and fitness aquatic centers and multiple court gymnasiums. Each club has racquetball, tanning and large multi age childcare centers. The Group Exercise Classes have always been the most diverse offerings. Find popular trend classes as well as cultural dance formats that reflect Purdue’s rich international population.
Perhaps the key to International Sports Clubs growth has been to find that balance between reflecting our community, making a concerted effort to listen and respond to our membership and what they desire in a facility, and to reach outside of our region and participate on a global level of what is fresh and new and best in a fitness center. International Sports Club’s name says it best; we never consider our standard of operations based on our local competition, we strive to achieve among the best in the world.
